The Presidio

DSC_0952.JPG

The old Presidio in Monterey may seem like more of a historical site, however there are a couple of fun, hidden skate spots that can be skated without disturbing a soul. If you’re headed North on Lighthouse Avenue, the main skateable structure in the Presidio is pretty much directly above you as you approach the Artillery Street Exit. Take the exit, then a right on Artillery Street, and follow the road up until you reach a large empty parking lot on the right. Now you’re in the Presidio and you can park anywhere in the lot. From here, you’re going to walk East up the grass hill towards the museum until you find an unmistakable slab of concrete. It’s a fairly small slab in the middle of the tall grass that has an upper and lower level to it. The upper level is pretty flat with a few cracks and a small curb, and the bottom creates about a 2 foot ledge from the top where a plastic yellow car barrier has been placed to skate like a hubba/ledge. The plastic barrier slides and grinds really well and is really fun to skate, just be mindful of old metal and other bits of debris that were left when this old concrete slab built to mount a cannon was abandoned. The drop from the upper to lower level is also a great size to perfect tricks or just to gain confidence. Overall, this is a super fun skate spot that is pretty lowkey and private. It also offers some pretty cool picture opportunity and it’s super unlikely that you’ll be booted by any official. Also, if you’re feeling super gnarly, there’s even an eight flat eight stair that has quite the skateboarding legacy behind it located right in front of the Presidio Museum.

RATING: 9/10
